That's good news str_merchant_and_you_call_some_townsmen_and_guards_to_get_ready_and_you_get_out_from_tavern|You leave the tavern and go out to the streets. Nervous looking young men are waiting in every street corner. You can see they have daggers and clubs concealed under their clothes, and catch a mixture of fear, anticipation and pride in the quick looks they throw at you as you pass by. Praying that your enemies have not been alarmed by this all too obvious bunch of plotters, you check your weapons for one last time and prepare yourself for the action ahead. str_town_fight_ended_you_and_citizens_cleaned_town_from_bandits|The remaining few bandits scatter off to the town's narrow alleys, only to be hunted down one by one by the angry townsfolk. Making sure that your victory is complete and all the wounded have been taken care of, you and the merchant head to his house to review the day's events. str_town_fight_ended_you_and_citizens_cleaned_town_from_bandits_you_wounded|You fall down with that last blow, unable to move and trying hard not to pass out. Soon the sounds of fighting filling the street gives way to the cheers of the townsmen and you realize with relief that your side won the day. Soon, friendly arms pick you up from the ground and you let yourself drift off to a blissful sleep. Hours later, you wake up in the merchants house. str_journey_to_galwe|You take a ship through the heartland of Perisno, cruising upriver from the Shining Ocean to the Amber Sea. Green shoots of wheat, barley and oats are beginning to push through the dark soil of the rolling hills, and on the lower slopes of snowcapped mountains, herds of cattle and sheep are grazing on the spring grass. The land here is rich -- but also troubled, as the occasional burnt-out farm bears witness. You keep a wide berth of the forests, where desperate men have taken refuge, and it is some relief when you crest a ridge and catch sight of the great port of Leuven, its rooftops made golden by the last rays of the setting sun. str_journey_to_freising|You sail across the Black Ocean to the Drachen highlands, a plateau exposed to the bitter winds from the north. The land here is frozen for most of the year, but the forests are rich with fur-bearing game, and the rivers are teaming with fish. The riches of the land draw the traders, but the traders in turn draw bandits. You see the occasional dark figure at the helm of a battle-scarred sloop, closely watching the passage of your ship through the icy water, and are glad when the spires of Freising come into view at the head of the bay. These lands are mysterious, and the stories tell of a dragon once seen in the sky- though no one would pass this off as more than a myth. str_journey_to_uliastai|You ride with a caravan, crossing the mountains that separate Perisno from the Scabrous Plains, bringing spices from faraway lands to trade for wool and salt. The passes are still choked with winter snow, but at last you crest a ridge and see before you the great Perisnoan steppes. On some hillsides, the thin grass of spring was yet to appear, but the lower slopes of the mountains were already a vibrant green. Herds of sheep and tawny steppe ponies drifted across them like clouds, a testament to the wealth of the Drahara emirs. From time to time, small groups of horsemen follow your caravan at a distance, perhaps sizing up how well you can defend the wealth you carry, so it is a great relief when you spot the towers of Uliastai rising up from the plains. str_journey_to_forde|You take passage with a trading longship, carrying gyrfalcons from the furthest reaches of the north to be bartered for linen and wool. It is still early in the season, but the captain reckons that the risks of drifting ice and later winter storms could be justified by an arrival ahead of the Volheere, who by April would be sailing forth from Nisaynian lairs to ravage Perinso's coasts. It is with some relief when the thatched rooves and narrow canals of Forde come into sight after passing through the Valahir Strait. You have entered the home to the Volheeres' distant kinsmen, the Maccavian lords, who a few generations ago carved themselves a kingdom in this rich but troubled land. str_journey_to_amarna|You ride with a caravan, crossing the great Scabrous Plains southeast of Perisno. The bedouin guides choose your route carefully, leapfrogging through treacherous dune fields and across empty gravel plains to the low-lying oases rich with orchards and date palms. You begin to fear that the caravan might lose its way and perish of thirst as the desert sea stretches out before you. The caravan encounters a small bands of raiders who hover just out of bowshot, waiting to pick off stragglers. This is an odd comfort- at least water could be no more than a day's ride away. It is a great relief when the mountains come into view, and on the evening of the following day you crest a rocky pass and in the distance can make out the sea, and the towers of Amarna silhouetted against the sunset. str_journey_to_grund|You join a trading Nisaynian longship carrying traders and mercenaries across the Black Ocean. The breeze off the water chills you and the crew to the bone, but the full sails soon put you in sight of of the snowy peaks of the island of the Valahir Clan. As you enter the strait, you see the Maccavian city of Arendal off the starboard side, and off the port side you see several smaller villages with plumes of campfire smoke rising in the snowy air. The longship follows the coast for some time, at one point passing a daunting fleet of ships commanded by a local aethling. Your anxiety fades away when you spot Grund in the distance, an oasis of green protruding from the whitewashed landscape and humming with activity. str_journey_to_forniron|You take a ship across the Shining Ocean, skirting the cliffs where the Naphali woodlands meet the sea. Much of the coastline is obscured by tendrils of fog that snake down the river valleys, but occasionally you catch sight of a castle watchtower rising above the mists -- and on one occasion, a beacon of fire burning to warn of an enemy warband. You know that you are relatively safe at sea, as you are too far south to risk encountering the sea pirates who trouble the coasts of the Maccavian lands, but it is still a relief to reach the Selver estuary, gateway to the port of Forniron, and see an Elintoran war boat raising anchor, its pennants fluttering in the evening breeze. str_journey_to_azure|You take a ship across the Shining Ocean, passing the dense jungles west of the mainland on your way. As you near the shore, the jungles open up into tall Naphali woodlands and long winding rivers shrouded in mist. Your company disembarks and you venture into the forest along a lightly treaded merchant path, passing Geldarin warbands looking for trouble and adventurers seeking fortune out west. The trees get taller and denser as the nature consumes your senses, and you begin to worry you have gotten lost until you see a small clearing up ahead. You have found the ancestral homeland of the Geldarin Naphali, the Azure Keep. str_journey_to_karnoth|You join a group of caravans crossing the Scabrous Plains beyond the southern mountains of Perisno. Eventually, the group splits and you follow the traders venturing westward, towards the barely visible but imposing range of mountains on the horizon. As the ground slopes up towards the peaks, the dunes of sand fall away and make way for a craggy landscape of boulders and shrubs. The caravan slogs through the mountain pass, slowed by the persistent snow of last winter, and are greeted by the verdant dwarven highlands on the other side. You move through the countryside, encountering many great keeps of stone and dwarven mining expeditions headed back towards the mountains, and soon enough stumble upon a great city gate carved into the rock face- the dwarven capital, Karnoth. str_journey_to_dwallnor|You join a group of caravans crossing the Scabrous Plains beyond the southern mountains of Perisno. Eventually, the group splits and you follow the traders venturing westward, towards the barely visible but imposing range of mountains on the horizon. Your attacker's rage immediately seems to slacken. He drops into a chair and sits there watching you, muttering under his breath, almost regretfully. A few of the other patrons manage to coax him to his feet and bundle him out the door. One of the others attends to your wounds, and soon you too are back on your feet, unsteady but alive. str_lost_tavern_duel_assassin|You slump to the floor, stunned by your attacker's last blow. Slowly and deliberately, he kneels down by your side, pulling a long knife from under his clothes. But before he can finish you off, the tavernkeeper, who seems to have regained his courage, comes up from behind and gives your attacker a clout behind the head. He loses his balance, and then, seeing that his chance to kill you has been lost, makes a dash for the door. He gets away. Meanwhile, the other tavern patrons bind your wounds and haul you to a back room to rest and recover. str_lost_startup_hideout_attack|You recover consciousness a short while later, and see that the kidnappers have celebrated their victory by breaking open a cask of wine, and have forgotten to take a few elementary precautions -- like binding your hands and feet. You manage to slip away. Based on the boisterous sounds coming from the hideout, you suspect that you may yet have some time to gather a few more followers and launch another attack. str_as_you_no_longer_maintain_an_independent_kingdom_you_no_longer_maintain_a_court|As you no longer rule an independent kingdom, you no longer maintain a court str_rents_from_s0|Rents from {s0} str_tariffs_from_s0|Tariffs from {s0} str_general_quarrel| We've found ourselves on the opposite side of many arguments over the years, and bad blood has built up between us. str_the_steppes|the steppes str_the_deserts|the deserts str_the_tundra|the tundra str_the_forests|the forests str_the_highlands|the highlands str_the_coast|the coast str_my_lady_not_sufficient_chemistry|My {lord/lady}, there are other {suitors/maidens} who have captured my heart. str_my_lady_engaged_to_another|My {lord/lady}, as I understand it, you are engaged to another. str_attempting_to_rejoin_party|Attempting to rejoin party, str_separated_from_party|Separated from party, str_leading_party|leading a party str_court_disbanded|As you no longer rule an independent kingdom, your court has been disbanded str_i_am_not_accompanying_the_marshal_because_will_be_reappointment| I am not accompanying the marshal, because I suspect that our ruler will shortly appoint another to that post. str_persuasion_opportunity|Persuasion opportunity.^Relation required for automatic success {reg4}^Current relationship {reg5}^Chance of success {reg7}^Chance of losing {reg9} relation point(s) {reg8} str_marshal_warning|You are not following {s1}. He said that they were interested in exploring, and were heading to Perisno. str_generic_rumor_13|The constant wars of Perisno have made its populace one of the most resilient in all of the lands. That said, there is only so much conflict one can stand in a life. str_generic_rumor_14|You know, I heard that the Great Bard Taragith is staying in Amarna right now. Who knows, maybe we can catch sight of him in the tavern! str_generic_rumor_15|I met a man who called himself a 'Republic Scholar' at the great library of Galwe. He said he was trying to find answers to a new form of government, called a Republic. How interesting, don't you think? str_generic_rumor_16|On an journey across Draharan lands I came across a band of men riding massive beasts with white swords protruding from either side of their mouths. Had I not been riding my trusty steed Rekin, they just may have caught me. str_generic_rumor_17|I do not have any rumors to tell but do you know the history of the Hakkon and Tolranians? They say the Tolranians were once Hakkonese but broke away and sailed to Perisno. Interesting stuff, huh? str_generic_rumor_18|I heard about someone called the Invincible knight. Said that he was the finest weapons master in this land and could defeat anyone. I wonder ... str_generic_rumor_19|I heard that the savage Volheere eat the corpses of dead men. Imagine that ... or rather, don't imagine that! How horrible. Watch yourself when you fight them. str_generic_rumor_20|Many people claim to have seen mysterious creatures riding around the lands of the Reich des Drachen. I for one think these people have lost their marbles. str_generic_rumor_21|A man came to me and told me about the supposed place where the Reich des Drachen comes from - the Isle of the Dragon. They say that exotic creatures roam there. I would love to see one. str_generic_rumor_22|It is said that the Amazons kill any male babies that they have or make them slaves. How horrible, don't you think? str_generic_rumor_23|I saw it happen, one day long, long ago. A fleet of ships carrying a strange banner of Nisaynia wrecked on the coast of Reich lands. Hundreds of men swarmed out of these ships, eager to raid and pillage anything in their paths. str_generic_rumor_24|A friend of mine, a scholar from the University of Galwe, told me that they were making breakthroughs on studying ancient artifacts and weapons. I don't get the point of history... str_generic_rumor_25|While I was traveling, a group of bandits ambushed me. Suddenly, a group of Glory-Seeking Men came to my rescue and drove them away. I love how they keep these lands safe. str_generic_rumor_26|While I was traveling, I was accosted by a group of Eagle Knights. The only thing that saved me from being killed from them were a group of Grazir Worshippers that ambushed them. The irony! str_generic_rumor_27|I owe my life to the great Sultan Yusuf Al-Salah. Then they stripped him of his lands and titles and took them for their own. str_generic_rumor_29|An associate of mine told me that there was a man called the Mythseeker who was crazy. It is said he searches endlessly for myths and tries to prove them to be fact. The scholars of Galwe would definitely disapprove! str_generic_rumor_30|I am a firm beliver in the practices of the New Gods. Unlike the violent Old Gods, they honor values such as peace, chivalry, grace, and family coherence. str_generic_rumor_31|The New Gods are nothing but peace-loving hooligans who know nothing of the true nature of life. The Old Gods are right in honoring war and strength over peace. str_generic_rumor_32|There is nothing like the thundering drum of hooves on the earth and the metallic uproar of steel hitting steel to make a man feel alive str_generic_rumor_33|I always love being in a town whilst a tournament is going on. Even though it scarcely happens, feeling you get when your man fights his way through every last round of the tournament is euphoric. str_generic_rumor_34|Sometimes when I am bored I will travel to Galwe and pick out a few books an Ancient Perisnoan History. It fascinates me how much Perisno has changed since the rule of the Venetoran Empire. str_generic_rumor_35|The best part of traveling in Perisno is sailing to the Valahir lands. The air is always crisp with a soft and cool edge, and the vast expanses of water give an impression of solitude that is hard to come by on the mainland. str_generic_rumor_36|I heard there was a dwarf named Gordga Hammerhead with a forge capable of refining any weapon! If there is any place for Sir Hammerhead, it would be at Dwallnor. str_generic_rumor_37|Urist Goldmuncher. Does that name sound familiar to you? Me? No. Never heard of this person before, but apparently he travels to Fountain Hall often, seling lucrative gear at lucrative prices. What madness! str_generic_rumor_end|End str_tolrania_rumor_1|It breaks my heart to see my babies go out to fight. We are at war so often, I hope those cursed Naphali go to hell! No wonder Captain Otto Waveshore decided to flee. str_tolrania_rumor_3|I heard a story recently from a wandering bard about a foreign empire called the Klymorian Empire. http //www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzruWH2nsNA feature=channel_page http //www.youtube.com/watch?v=liQXhexIYRk feature=channel_page Here s how to do an object-tracking shot, using the example shotlazysue.avi, which shows a revolving kitchen storage tray spinning (called a Lazy Susan in the U.S. for some reason). This shot provides a number of educational opportunities. It can be tracked either automatically or under manual supervision, so both will be described. The basic point of object tracking is that the shot contains an object whose motion is to be determined so that effects can be added. The camera might also be moving; that motion might also be determined if possible, or the object s motion can be determined with respect to the moving camera, without concern for the camera s actual motion. The object being tracked must exhibit perspective effects during the shot. If the object occupies only a small portion of the image, this will be unlikely. A film or HD source will help provide enough accuracy for perspective shifts to be detected. For object-tracking, all the features being tracked must remain rigidly positioned with respect to one another. For example, if a head is to be tracked, feature points must be selected that are away from the mouth or eyes, which move with respect to one another. If the expression of a face is to be tracked for character animation, see the section onMotion Capture. Moving-object tracking is substantially simpler than motion capture, and requires only a single shot and no special on-set preparation during shooting. Automatic Tracking · Open the lazysue.avi shot, using the default settings. · On the Solver panel, set the camera s solving mode toDisabled. · On the Shot menu, selectAdd Moving Object. You will see the object at the origin as a diamond-shaped null object. · Switch to the Roto panel, with the camera viewport selected. · Scrub through the shot to familiarize yourself with it, then rewind back to the beginning. · Click the create-spline (magic wand) button on the Roto panel. · Click roughly in the center of the image to establish the center point. · Click counterclockwise about the moving region of the shot, inset somewhat from the stationary portion of the cabinetry and inset from the bottom edge of the tray. Right-click after the last point. [The shape is shown below.] · Click the create-spline (magic wand) button again to turn it off. · Double-click the vertices as necessary to change them to corners. · In the spline list on the Roto panel, select Spline1 and hit the delete key. · On the object setting underneath the spline list, change the object setting from Garbage to Object01. Your screen should look something like this · Go to the Feature Panel. · Change the Motion Profile toGentle Motion. · HitBlips all frames. · HitPeel All. · Go to the end of the shot. · Verify that the five dots on the flat floor of the lazy susan have associated trackers a green diamond on them. · If you need to add a tracker to a tracking mark, turn on the Peel button on the Feature panel. Scrub around to locate a long track on each untracked spot, then click on the small blip to convert it to a tracker. Turn off Peel mode when you are done. · Switch to the Coordinate System Panel. · Go to frame 65. · Change the tracker on the “floor” that is closest to the central axis to be the origin. · Set the front center floor tracker to be a Lock Point, locked to 10,0,0. · Set the front right tracker toXY Plane(or XZ plane for a Y-Up axis mode). · Switch to the Solver Panel. · Make sure the Constrain checkbox is off. · Hit Go!. · Go to theAfter Trackingsection, below. Supervised Tracking The shot is best tracked backwards the trackers can start from the easiest spots, and get tracked as long as possible into the more difficult portion at the beginning of the shot. Tracking backwards is suggested for features that are coming towards the camera, for example, shots from a vehicle. · Open the lazysue.avi shot, using the default settings. · On the Solver panel, set the camera s solving mode toDisabled. · On the shots menu, selectAdd Moving Object. You will see the object at the origin as a diamond-shaped null object. · On the Tracker panel, turn onCreate. The trackers will be associated with the moving object, not the camera. · Switch to the Camera viewport, to bring the image full frame. · Click theTo End button on the play bar. · Click the Playback direction button from to (backwards). · Create a tracker on one of the dots on the shelf. Decrease the tracker size to approximately 0.015, and increase the horizontal search size to 0.03. · Create a tracker on each spot on the shelf. Track each as far as possible back to the beginning of the shot. Use the tracker interior view to scroll through the frames and reposition as needed. As the spots go into the shadow, you can continue to track them, using the tracker gain spinner. When a tracker becomes untrackable, turn off Enable, and Lock the tracker. Right-click the spinner to reset it for the next tracker. · Continue adding trackers from the end of the shot roughly as follows · Begin tracking from the beginning, by rewinding, changing the playback direction to forward, then adding additional trackers. You will need to add these additional trackers to achieve coverage early in the shot, when the primary region of interest is still blocked by the large storage container. · Switch to the graph editor in graph mode, sort by error mode. Use the mouse to sweep through and select the different trackers. Or, select Sort by error on the main View menu, and use the up and down arrows on the keyboard to sequence through the trackers. Look for spikes in the tracker velocity curves (solid red and green). Switch back to the camera view as needed for remedial work. · Switch to the Coordinate System control panel and camera viewport, at the end of the shot. · Select the tracker at center back on the surface of the shelf; change it to anOriginlock. · Select the tracker a bottom left on the shelf, change it toLock Pointwith coordinate X=10. · Select the tracker at front right; change it to anOn XY Planelock (or On XZ if you use Y-axis up for Maya or Lightwave). · Switch to the Solver control Panel. · Switch to the Quad view; zoom back out on the Camera viewport. · Hit Go! After solving completes in a few seconds, hit OK. · Continue to theAfter Trackingsection, below. After Tracking · Switch to the 3-D Objects panel, with the Quad viewport layout selected. · Click theWorldbutton, changing it toObject. · Turn on the Magic Wand tool and select the Cone object. · In the top view, draw a cone in the top-right quadrant, just above and right of the diamond-shaped object marker. · Hint it can be easier to adjust the cone s position in the Perspective view, locked to the camera, withView/Local coordinate handlesturned on. · Scrub the timeline to see the inserted cone. In your animation package, a small amount of camera-mapped stand-in geometry would be used to make the large container occlude the inserted cone and reveal correctly as the shelf spins. · Advanced techniques useCoalesce TrackersandClean Up Trackers. Difficult Situations When an object occupies only a relatively small portion of the frame, there are few trackers, and/or the object is moving so that trackers get out of view often, object tracking can be difficult. You may wind up creating a situation where the mathematically best solution does not correspond to reality, but to some impossible tracker or camera configuration. It is an example of the old adage,“Garbage In, Garbage Out”(please don’t be offended, gentle reader). Goosing the Solver Small changes in the initial configuration may allow the solver to, essentially randomly, pick a more favorable solution. Be sure to use theSlow but surecheckbox and all the different possibilities of the Rough camera motion selection, both on the solver panel. Trying a variety of manually-selected seed frames is also suggested. Small changes in trackers, or adding additional trackers, especially those at different depths, may also be helpful in obtaining the desired solution. Inverting Perspective Sometimes, in a low-perspective object track, you may see a situation where the object model and motion seem almost correct, except that some things that are too far away are too close, and the object rotates the wrong way. This is a result of low/no/conflicting perspective information. If you cannot improve the trackers or convince the solver to arbitrarily pick a different solution, read on. TheInvert Perspectivescript on the Script menu will invert the object and hopefully allow you to recover from this situation quickly. It flips the solved trackers about their center of gravity, on the current frame, changes them to seed trackers (this will mess up any coordinate system), and changes the solving mode toFrom Seed Points. You can then re-solve the scene with this solution, and hopefully get an updated, and better, path and object points. You should then switch back to Refine mode for further tracking work! Using a 3-D Model You might also encounter situations where you have a 3-D model of the object to be tracked. If SynthEyes knows the 3-D coordinates of each tracker, or at least 6-10 of them, it will be much easier to get a successful 3-D track. You can import the 3-D model into SynthEyes, then use the Perspective window s Place mode to locate the seed point of each tracker on the mesh at the correct location. Turn on the Seed checkbox on for each, and switch to the From Seed Points solving mode on. If you have determined the 3-D coordinates of your tracker externally (such as from a survey or animation package), construct asmall text filecontaining the x, y, and z coordinates, followed by the tracker name. Use File/Import/Tracker Locations to set these coordinates as the seed locations, then use the From Seed Points solver option. If the tracker named doesn’t exist, it will be created (using the defaults from the Tracker Panel, if open), so you can import your particular points first, and track them second, if desired, though tracking first is usually easier. The seed points will help SynthEyes select the desired (though suboptimal) starting configuration. In extreme situations, you may want to lock the trackers to these coordinates, which can be achieved easily by setting all the imported trackers to Lock Points on the Coordinate System panel. To make this easy, all the affected trackers are selected after an Import/Tracker Locations operation.

Well, well. There you are. Tried to trick me, didn t you? No one tricks old Wazza, I ll tell you that for free. Now, come on. Come on! Vinnie finds Zoë The last time I saw this place, it was desolate. Now, there s life everywhere. The Guardian s Realm has really changed. Am not! I ll prove it! She s stirring something in that big cauldron. Examine soup lady far I told you to stay away from there! Second time Hey, get away from there! I m not telling you again! Third time Ah, good. Na ane s already here. Maybe she has some news for me. Na ane said there s an informant waiting for me on the pier. MISSING TEXT Hey she s a rebel leader, yo! She told me I can find the Scorpion on the pier. I should not keep her waiting. I m surprised at how quickly you were defeated... So it seems that you are not unbeatable after all, Apostle. It was an honour to be defeated by you, Apostle. Will all due respect, Apostle, I pray that you will perform better in the field than you did in the ring today. Bad or mediocre performance after The Six could not wish for a better Apostle than you. Your skill with the blade is beyond compare, Apostle. To see you defeated...this is a rare sight, Apostle. The rumours of your skill with the blade are vastly exaggerated... The Word of the Goddess is safe in your hands, Apostle. Let s hope the faithless are more charitable than we were today. I stand humbled before you, Apostle. You were too easy on us, Apostle. Mediocre performance It seems that anyone can become an Apostle these days... No Goddessless heathen is safe from your sword, Apostle! Good performance after Let s hope you re afforded more quarter in the heathen lands than you were here today. Bad or med performance after We may disagree on many matters, but I hold Master Garmon in the highest esteem. He is true of heart, and a faithful friend and teacher. Go right in, Apostle. You are expected. May the Goddess protect you on your Mission, Apostle. Please enter, Apostle. Go with the Six, Apostle. These soldiers are charged with the protection of the Six, and of the Council. It is a great honour to be considered for such a duty. Examine once I believe I have trained with both of these guards myself. The Six, and the Goddess, have entrusted me, their servant and Apostle, with an important mission. Thank God you re here, Liv. I don t know what to do. Reza s disappeared and the EYE s looking for him! I need you to slow down, sweetie. Where have you been? I came over last night, but you weren t home. No one had heard from you, and your mobile was off the Wire. Completely. That s because I was arrested! I don t know what s happened to him or where he is. They asked me all kinds of questions about him. I think he s in serious trouble, Liv. Calm down, sweetie. I m sure he s all right. Take a deep breath, and start from the top. Okay. (Deep breath) Upset Yeah? Oh, hey! ...and when I woke up I was in this strange room in the Syndicate building. Alone. I spent half the night in there. Over and over again, the same questions about Reza, Jiva, the package... They didn t let me go until early this morning. Wow. Zoë, that s...that s so scary. I can t imagine what it was like for you. You must have the worst hangover in history. Wow. Dead girl A datacube. They told me it held sensitive information, but that s all I know. I didn t open it, but they told me it contained a datacube with sensitive information of some sort. It had to be pretty sensitive for the EYE to raid Reza s place. I wonder what it was. This sounds really serious, Zoë. Whatever it was, I don t believe Reza had anything to do with the dead woman. He wouldn t hurt a fly. It must be that story he s working on. Maybe he pissed off the wrong people? Maybe he uncovered something really bad? And now...now I m involved, too. You ll be okay, sweetie. They let you go. Hey, what was the name of that company again? I ll rustle up some contacts, do a bit of digging, see if anyone s got the lowdown. Jiva. And the woman s name was Helena Chang. I ll send out some feelers on the old network, see what I can come up with. It has to ring someone s bell. We ll figure this thing out, Zoë. And, you know, I m sure Reza s fine. He s been in trouble before. He knows his way around those Syndicate goons. Well, I don t know about that. See, I got this message from him through Wonkers. It was automatically triggered because he didn t check in for twenty-four hours. They would. You re not meant to go snooping around there, Zoë. The EYE means business. Reza s in trouble and he needs my help. I have to get those notes. Can you help me? I don t know about that. I got a message from him through Wonkers. It was automatically triggered because he didn t check in for twenty-four hours. Sure you wanna go back there, sweetie? You don t mess with the EYE. Those battlesuits aren t Halloween costumes. Besides, his flat s probably been sealed by now. Reza s in trouble, and he needs my help. There must be something you can do. No Reza If you re absolutely sure...yeah. I can get you through an EYE seal, but we ll need to upgrade your mobile. What if I m arrested again? I don t need to get charged with possession of illegal software on top of everything else. Don t worry, I ll mask the hack. Anyone checks your mobile, all they ll find are some new avatar masks. What do you want? Fluffy bunny rabbits or cuddly koala bears? Surprise me. Get Hack Done. You re good to go. But Zoë? Promise me you ll be careful, okay? And give me a call if you need help with anything...or get yourself into trouble. No trouble. And I ll definitely call you if I need help. Thanks, Olivia. You re the best. Sweetie, I m sending you into EYE territory equipped with an illegally modified mobile. I m either your best friend or your worst enemy. I disabled the seal on Reza s apartment using your hack, but it turns out they ve got a spider watching the place. What kind of spider? Describe it to me. Um. Four legs, shiny, size of a football? I need more to go on than that, Zoë. Did you see a logo? Not really. I just came by to say hello. Are you okay, sweetie? Just a bit overwhelmed, Liv. But yeah, I m okay. See you later? Sure. Take care, okay? Bye! I took a closer look at the spider. Notice any distinguishing features, like a logo? Checked out spider There was a logo...like a golden lion s head. Asad Robotics. They re based in Mogadishu. They put together some of the best robotics in the world. Probably the S-850 series. I know the EYE ordered several thousands of that one a few years back. Luckily, we cracked the security codes on those a while ago. I ll up the software you need to hack into and disable it to your mobile. Just a sec. Saw it I didn t get a good look at it. Sorry. Okay. There s not much I can do to help you. Didn t see it Well, most basic security spiders aren t that hard to trick. They react to sound and movement, in that order. If you move slowly and don t make any loud noises, you should be able to sneak by it. Wake it up, and you ll have to stay completely still until it goes back to sleep. If you don t, you ll get fried. Is there any way to permanently disable a spider? Aside from hacking? Good question. All right, so move quietly, stay still if it wakes up, find a way to expose it to water. Instructions You re good to go, Zoë. Good to go Okay, but first let me tell you how this hack works. The firewall s got these symbols that are difficult to automatically decipher. Don t ask me why. It s a mystery. All you have to do is match the symbols at the bottom of the screen with the exact same symbols in the matrix - one by one. Match all the symbols, and the codebreaker does the rest. But there s a time limit. Stay connected for too long, and the codebreaker disconnects. That way, you avoid triggering alarms. You can usually reconnect again after a few seconds. So it s almost like a game. Sweetie, it s definitely not a game. There are real people safeguarding the Wire, and most of them aren t particularly friendly. You don t need to tell me that. I ve learned the hard way. Liv? What s up, sweetie? Nothing much. I just stopped by to say hello. I ll see you later, okay? He wanted me to pick up his notes from his flat. I dropped by earlier, but I couldn t get in. They ve sealed the door. The message told me how to find his notebook in his flat. That might give me some idea what s happened to him. Hey, did you see that? Vision See what, sweetie? On the screen. I saw the same thing earlier today. It was like... I don t quite know how to describe it. Mmm, no. Could ve been the Static. It s been getting worse by the day. I even got disconnected from the Wire for a few moments this morning. There s this snowy landscape with a black house...and a little girl who looks like a ghost. And she speaks to me. "Save her, find her". Really, really freaky stuff. Wow. That is scary. I haven t seen that, I definitely would ve remembered. Are you sure you just haven t been watching too many horror movies lately? Don t you start with that, too, Liv. I m already feeling guilty enough as it is. I m sorry, sweetie. I didn t mean anything― No, it s okay. It s me. I don t know what s going on with me. I can barely get out of bed in the morning. I see you all the time, don t I? You haven t abandoned me. No, but that s because it s so easy to come here. If it requires any more effort on my part... And that goes for everything. I m on autopilot. What was that, sweetie? Oh, yeah, that s right. It s something really cool! You re probably right. And I do complain way too much, don t I? I don t want to be the whiny, apathetic Zoë. I want to be me again. Okay. Let s pretend for a second that I haven t a clue what you re talking about. Can do. It s like a...a cloak for your mobile. Want to be invisible? Just tap the screen! Well, actually, you select menu and applications , and then the icon that looks like a penguin, and then activate , but that s like one...two...three... Okay, four taps. Small price to pay, seeing as you re now invisible, right? I don t get it. I m invisible? No, you re not invisible. That s impossible, except with a very, very expensive combat suit, and those things don t hold up to a can of spray paint. What this little hack does is make your mobile invisible to the Eye in the Sky. You re untraceable. The Syndicate can t track your mobile. Mondo cool, huh? That is cool. How does it work? You just, what, wire it to my mobile? Yup. Easy as strawberry pie. Gimme a second, and I ll― Invisible Oops. This is, like, important, sweetie. I m buying a batch of exclusive Ethiopian mobiles directly from the factory, real cheap. So I gotta― I ll hook you up with the software when you come back, okay? You re not going to believe this. I was attacked. Again! Yeah. Just...just a bit shaken. What? Sweetie! Are you okay? I really thought they were going to kill me. One of them slammed me up against the wall, knocked the breath out of me, and... What were they looking for? Did they take anything? Twins Hey, do you have the notebook? Then I came straight here. I need your help with the notes. What? Zoë! Reza entrusted you with the information. You should go get it immediately. No Notepad Okay sweetie, I need time to decrypt this thing. It s got some heavy locks on it...except for the final entry. Newport. That s in North America. The west coast. I wonder what The Fringe is. Maybe he s meeting this Charlie guy at a restaurant? I have to go to Newport. I don t know, sweetie. Maybe you should just give the information to Reza s editor. Let The Hand That Bites handle it. I can t do that. This is Reza we re talking about. He s in trouble. I can t just sit here and wait for him to come back. What if he needs my help? I ll work on decrypting the rest of Reza s notes. We need to figure out what he was working on. It could take a while, so I ll just close up the store. My regulars know how to get in touch. I ll call you as soon as I got something. And the notepad, do you still have it? Give it to me, sweetie, and I ll see what I can do. Here s Reza s notepad. Give notebook Hey, sweetie. What s up? Oh, nothing much. All right! Hey, Liv, I need some help. Okay. Just a sec, and I ll let you know what we re dealing with. Thanks, Liv. Okay. I ll update your mobile now. Oh, and I m also giving you that software cloak we spoke about yesterday. You ll be invisible to everyone. Even me. (To mobile) Tadiyass, Alem! Dehna neh? What kind of animal is that? An ape? It seems almost...human. When I threw the pebble, that creature got distracted for a while. Maybe it could work again? If already thrown There s really no point. If no grubber Those glowing symbols look like they re etched right into the rock. Examine before touch I think each of these symbols play a musical note. Examine after touch Maybe I m supposed to play a sequence of notes...like a melody. But what melody? Examine again after touch There are massive cogwheels and clockwork mechanisms down there. I think they re connected to the waterwheel. It looks like a city, but I think it s deserted. Thank God. All this stuff, it s like something out of a fantasy role-playing game. That must be Clara. She certainly looks the part. Examine before talk close Yup. She s pretty crazy, all right. Examine after talk Crazy Clara. Never has a name been more fitting. Examine again after talk They are ready for me. All I have to do is step into the circle. I think most everyone here works for WATIcorp. This is a one company town, which means that everyone works for WATIcorp. The ticket machine s out of order. Examine after try Employees only, I imagine. Examine after use Hey Olivia. If Zoë just ran Sweetie, what was up with you this morning? You just ignored me! Oh, sorry about that. I was in such a hurry to get to the gym. Don t worry about it. Hey, are you busy now? I wouldn t say that. Why, what s up? I have something I want to show you. Something really cool. Come up to the store, and I ll show you. All right. I ll be there in a few minutes. Hey Liv. What s up? If Zoë said she wasn t busy Where are you? I thought you were gonna pop into the store, but you vanished. I have something to show you. Oops. Sorry about that. I was running really late for the gym. Don t worry about it, sweetie. Do you have time now? Sure. I ll be there in a few minutes. Okay. See ya! I don t know Jawhar very well, but I ve met him a few times. Jawhar. I don t know his last name. Liv s workstation. No network in the world is safe when she gets wired. Olivia s workstation. I really have no idea what that s supposed to be. Refurbished and upgraded bots is a specialty of Liv s. She makes tons of money from that. Those Watillas are probably a lot smarter and more versatile than Wonkers...but I don t care. Wonkers is special. There s a boat down there. It s a waterfall. Why doesn t it hit the wheel? Before waterwheel examine The machine caused the water to be diverted onto the wheel. Examine after waterwheel I sure hope that latter leads out of this place. Examine bottom before It s broken. There s no way to climb up there. It collapsed right under my feet! I m so lucky to be standing here... Examine before first jump It s a long way up...but at least it s going up. That must be a good sign. Examine bottom after What a strange contraption. It...reminds me of something, but I can t put my finger on it. This place must be ancient, but that thing looks as good as new. Solid craftsmanship. It s incredible that something like this has existed underneath Marcuria for so long, without anyone knowing about it. Broken. This looks incredibly advanced, and incredibly old. But there weren t machines in Arcadia before the Azadi came along...were there? That rope is the only way to get from here to there. Hopefully it ll hold my weight. Looks like there are more bridges further down. These caves are massive. There is evidence of someone, or something, living down here. It must be these creatures I keep seeing. I m either stuck here, or I jump across. Examine again before I can jump that thing again, I m sure of it. There s light seeping through, but I can t see anything. Benrime installed that mechanical beer tap to stay on good terms with the Azadi. She hates using it. It keeps breaking down. No heretic will be spared my sword! I ll make the terrorists pay for what they have done to trueborn. Rebel weaponry. Tainted with the blood of many a trueborn, no doubt. My men will bring swift justice to the terrorists who hide in this place. We will never surrender to you, Azadi! Taste my blade, Azadi dog! It seems you ve found us a rebel nest, Apostle. Let s make these terrorists pay for their crimes against the Goddess, Apostle. At least fire looks the same here as it does back home. I mean, that s something. The Journeyman used to be so busy. Nowadays, Benrime s lucky to serve twenty guests in an evening. The bars and taverns near the tower are filled with Azadi. I prefer it here. It s a bit quiet these days, but Benrime still serves the best food and drink in town, no question about it. (Sniffs) The soup smells pretty good, even though I m not hungry. Theres a big cauldron in that cart. Probably some kind of mobile kitchen. Hey, he looks familiar. Where did I see him? This is one of the few places left that looks exactly like it did before the Azadi came. Except for that modern beer tap... The ambience here in the Journeyman sure has changed since my last visit to the city. The Ghetto s full of contraband goods. Once in a while we have to go in there to clear it out. We ll show those damn magicals who s in charge around here. That s right, baby. Play your cards right today, and I might take you for a ride tonight. Oh yeah. Yeah, sweet peach. Name s Iqbal, and I m a man s man. Wanna see my...panty collection? We re so lucky to be living here in Casablanca. This city really prospered after the Collapse, together with most of Africa. My daughter Hana moved home from Europolis last spring. From what she told me, it s not a good place to live. So much violence and pollution. If there s another Collapse, this is the safest place to be. Lots of rich people moved here the last time around. Our system s better able to handle a total breakdown. This is such a nice marketplace. Downtown, there are only malls and franchises. The free flow of capital attracts all kinds of people to Casablanca. Rich people. My kind of people. I m sure someone will figure out what s causing the Static soon, and put an end to it. If the Syndicate can t figure out what s causing the Static, I m sure the Hand That Bites will. They re always on top of these things. My daughter works over on the main campus, across the canyon. She s doing a lot of overtime. I haven t seen her in weeks. I ve been thinking about leaving Wati City and moving to Africa. My options are a bit limited here. Everyone here works for WATIcorp in some capacity. There s zero unemployment. All eyes will be on WATIcorp in the very near future, I m sure. My sister s working on Alchera, but she won t tell me a thing about it. I ve heard that the whole development team is under surveillance. I wish I could find work over on the main campus, but you need to have very specific skills. At the Journeyman, traditional values still hold true, and you re allowed to be who you are. The Azadi, they want everyone to be the same. You know, I ve heard rumours that freedom fighters frequent the Journeyman. I think Benrime might be working with the movement... Back in the old days, this place was filled with laughter, song, and magic. Look at it now. It s a bit sad, isn t it? I don t know why I still come here, since I like to dance and sing. I should try one of the new places down Ayrede Avenue. So maybe there was more poverty and crime before, but at least we were free to speak and believe anything we wanted. The Azadi rarely come in here, except when they re doing inspections, so we can speak freely. I don t come to Marcuria much these days. I don t like what s happening here. Up north, things are the same as always. It s bad enough to move all the non-humans into a ghetto, but to tell me I can t practise my religion in public... Now that s too much. Talking to strangers is bound to cause trouble. I just want to go about my business without rocking the boat. All I care about is the safety of my loved ones. As long as I stay out of trouble, we ll be all right. I don t understand how anyone could talk badly about the Azadi. I think the Azadi are brilliant. I think it s great that the magicals have their own place now. It s more pleasant for everyone. Sadir is the most amazing city in the world! I ve never been there, but I can just see it. Technology everywhere! Truly a city of tomorrow! Technology is the way of the future! One day we ll have steam machines on wheels transporting us where we want to go! Call me insane, but I know it to be true! Conditions in the ghetto aren t bad, all things considered. We got food and water, and there s medicine and herbs for everyone. What we don t have is freedom. They said they were moving us into the ghetto for our own protection. Protection from what? Every other day, the Azadi are raiding the ghetto, confiscating personal belongings and merchandise. It s harrassment, plain and simple. No, no, I don t speak to strangers, that s dangerous, that is. I can t go anywhere else in Marcuria, not without special permission. And I can t go home. There s nothing left of my home. There are so few left of us now. My brothers and sisters have all been killed... Sir. Excuse me. Don t hurt me! Please, I ve done nothing wrong! I m sorry. I ve stayed inside the walls of Oldtown, and I haven t stolen anything from anyone. Please, I just want to stay here and not get in anyone s way. I don t even know why I m still here in Marcuria. I should leave while I have a chance. One day, those gates will be closed...for good. April/Zoë They treat us like animals, the Azadi, locking us up inside the ghetto and restricting our movement. "Four our own protection," my ass. My brother was arrested a few months ago, and I haven t heard from him since. They never told us what he did wrong, or where he is. I could be next... There was already a raid this morning. What do you people want now? There s nothing left here for you to take, Azadi. Nothing except for our lives. If you re not going to arrest me, then leave me alone. This museum s a bit shit, isn t it? And there s only this one room? I can t believe I actually paid good money to come here. I shouldn t have let her drag me up here. She makes the worst choices. I could ve been scuba diving in the Philippines right now. Who cares about that big announcement of theirs. It s all kid s stuff, anyway. Wow, this place is just so amazing. I didn t know technology could be so exciting! I m learning so much right now. What are they gonna think of next? Like, a new Watilla, but with wings? That would be awesome. I m so excited about that new product WATIcorp s coming out with. It s going to be so awesome, I just know it. Maybe it s like a new Watilla, but with wings... Get your ma― Maritime accessories. Eh, everything any discerning sea farer could covet. Oh, my insignificant collection of knick knacks probably wouldn t interest a man of your exalted tastes, good sir. I will do anything I can to assist you, sir, within my limitations. I am, after all, no magician. Just give me your worst, Azadi. For every one of us you strike down, another ten will rise. This war is just getting started. Your goddess can t help you here. You re far from your holy city, Azadi. Another cold and rainy day in Newport...and to make things worse, my arthritis is acting up. I can t afford any procedures. I can t even afford medicine. Not so long ago, these useless hands taught holo-sculpting at VAVA. Did you know that Emma de Vrijer was once a student of mine? She s a really famous sculptress now. They moved VAVA out of Venice, which is ironic. And they downsized every department. Kicked me out with a day s notice. Bastards. It sounds like the worst cliché, but things really were better in the old days. At least for me. The gangs have taken over the entire neighbourhood. And it won t stop here. Soon, it s gonna spread to the rest of the city. Those kids, they usually leave me be. They know that ain t got nothing worth stealing. But once in a while, they beat me up, just to prove that they can. I hope Jama wasn t too hard on you for being late. Again. Hey, you made it! Good for you. Jama s not in the best mood today. If not late Jama can be so strict sometimes. Are you taking part in the tournament today? I d love a chance to go up against you. You re here, like, every day, aren t you? You re taking this too seriously. I m just trying to keep toned, not learn how to, you know, kill people. Jama s pretty cool. I mean, she can be bitchy, and she never, like, gives me a compliment. But... Wait, she s not cool at all. I saw you sparring with Jama. That was pretty cool. You rock. I saw you sparring with Jama just now. You kinda sucked, didn t you? There s no way I m gonna be able to beat you in the tournament. I ll have to settle for second. Or, you know, third or fourth. I m definitely gonna kick your ass in the tournament. I need to work on my kicks. You performed badly today. Jama must be very disappointed. You did well today. Jama must be pleased. I plan on winning this tournament. If tournament Practice and sparring is fine, but real competition separates the winners from the losers. I used to have no trouble getting a date. Nowadays, if you don t wear a uniform, the ladies ignore you. I m thinking about moving back to the Southlands. For one, it s a lot warmer. I hear that Corescent is negotiating with the Azadi for a treaty. If that happens, there might finally be peace in the Northlands. Still no spices, I m afraid. I ran out of money to pay my supplier...but tomorrow s another day! I hope! To Zoë negative The new administration has introduced so many taxes and fees, it s hard to make ends meet down here. Rebel activity in the north has delayed deliveries, so I don t have much left to sell, I m afraid. Say what you will about them, but the Azadi have genuine respect for women. That s a nice change. I can tell that you ve been raised to respect women. You re all such perfect gentlemen. This market used to be a damn sight better before they closed the gate and the harbour, and moved most of the business west of Cold Stone. I was quite the looker in my younger days, and I m sure I would ve turned your head around. It s not that I have a problem with the Azadi...but do they have to take all the women? Maybe I should join the army. I m not getting a date wearing these clothes, that s for sure. Please keep those pesky magicals in the ghetto. Life has become so much more predictable without all this magic stuff going on everywhere. We don t need magic. We got technology now. Magic is chaos, technology is predictable. You look like you get a lot of attention from women. Tell me, is it the clothes, the hair, or just the fact that you re incredibly good looking? Hey there. Can I help you with anything? Anything at all? You re a handsome one. Would you like to visit me at the tavern tonight? I work as a serving girl, and I wear a really low dress... You look like a real man. There are too many farmers around here. They smell bad. I don t know how Irhad feels about the Azadi, but I m sure they could work something out. We don t need another war. Now that the Tyren are gone, there s finally hope of lasting peace in the Northlands. I hope you understand that we re not a violent people. We only want peace and prosperity for all nations and peoples. As long as you protect us, I don t care about your motives. Are you going north to fight the rebels? Please remember that they only want the best for their people. I m sure you can solve your differences peacefully. There are soldiers everywhere. I don t honestly care about politics, but I d like to be somewhere a little more...laid back. I ve lived in Marcuria for too long. I want to go back south, across the ocean. I m tired of all the noise and the bad weather. I don t quite see how I ll make ends meet, but I m sure something will...pop up. I told my poor, old mother I d be bringing her some firewood and stew tonight, but it looks like she ll have to burn some more furniture and eat the cat. Business is just fantastic! Ever since you helped me out, I ve been blessed with happy customers and a steady supply! You ve brought me good luck and fortune! To Zoë positive Yesterday, I bought my mother a new stove, a fine walking stick, and a glazed gipa. You should have seen the look in her eyes! If I didn t know better, I d say you were a faerie queen, young lady! Why hello there, ma am! What an absolutely wonderful day to be exploring the city! Now, you look like you need to spice up your life. Eh? Get it? Eh? Spice? Life? Wonderful! I don t care whether my customers are Azadi, Dolmari, Northlanders, Southlanders, or anything in between! They re all welcome! Fantastic! That s a terrific coat you have there, sir! Must keep you nice and warm, even in this weather! A lovely day to you, sir. A lovely, lovely, lovely day! I ve tasted some of those spices you Azadi have brought with you from Sadir. Wonderful, exotic stuff! Isn t life grand? South Gate Market is definitely not what it used to be. I m lucky if I see a dozen customers before noon. The added expenses and lack of customers is ruining me. Soon, I ll have to find another way to make money. I ve already paid the vendor license, the stall rental, and the administrative fees, sir. My papers are in perfect order. Please, sir, sales have been bad lately, and I need money for food and rent. I ve already paid my bills. Just ask the market master. There s not much left of today s catch, sir, but I ve managed to put a few oysters aside. They re yours if you want them, sir. We got torsk! We got one torsk left! We re almost out of torsk! Call out Crabs, I ve got two crabs left! Fresh and tasty! Crabs for dinner! Come get em! Last call for fresh fish today, last call! I don t care what people say, as long as the Azadi encourage fair trade, I m happy. There was trouble in the ghetto again this morning. It s really affecting my business, because deliveries can t get through. Anything you can do to stop those rebels would be much appreciated. The rebels are hurting my business with their attacks on convoys. Deliveries are slow, and the quality of the merchandise is lower. Good luck tracking down the rebels, sir. They really are making life miserable for everyone. Oldtown s the best place to buy rare and interesting books. You just need to know where to look. I don t go anywhere without a good book, and I have thousands at home. My wife, she moved out. I think she realised I loved my books more than I loved her. I don t like coming here anymore. Not because of the magicals, but because everyone s so afraid about what s going to happen. I don t live here. I m just visiting. I m just looking for books. I don t usually mingle with magicals. Good day to you. I ll be on my way now. Oldtown s not a bad place to be. If only the Azadi would leave us be, like they promised they would. My friends have all left the city, but I m staying. I m not going back into the caves. I enjoy life in the big city too much to give that up. Personally, I ve always been discriminated against. Actually, this is better, because now the other magicals see me as one of them. I thought you people never ventured in here alone. You don t look like the others. There s something different about you... If you would just try to see things from our perpective, I m sure we could all live together in harmony. What do the Azadi want from us? Why have they stuck us in here? We haven t done anything to them, and we can t help who we are. People here in Marcuria used to respect us Dolmari. The times have certainly changed. We live in constant fear. Sooner or later, I m sure they ll arrest the lot of us, and send us off to... I don t know. Just leave us be. We haven t done you or your people any harm. Why are you harrassing us? We can t help being who we are, any more than you can help being human. I don t understand why you don t like us. Is it the colour of my skin? I ve never used magic to hurt anyone, and I never intend to. My mother is ill. This is the only place where they have the right medicine. Most of the old medicines have been banned from the markets. Oldtown s the only place where I can still find them. The Azadi are banning everything they don t understand. What s that all about? I have a right to be here. The ghetto is open now. I m not up to anything illegal, I assure you. I m just out for a walk. There s no curfew in effect now, is there? If there is, I will leave immediately. Oldtown s getting too crowded. It just wasn t built to house so many people. People here are still trying to live their lives the way they used to, but it s getting more and more difficult by the day. I know that some of my kind have disguised themselves in order to conduct business out in the city. I admire their courage. You d all rather wish we d just disappear, wouldn t you? I can t change who I am. How would you like it if I tried to change you? You can force me to comply, but you can never, ever force me to agree with you. The Azadi can do whatever they wish with me, I will never bow to their goddess. I am only in town for a short visit. I will not stay long. I am better off back home. The Dark People are amazing. They re collectors, and they have a great library containing every book ever written. I ve never minded the magicals. I actually enjoy their company. They re more interesting than humans. As long as I can stand up, I ll keep fighting these invaders. To April/Zoë The Azadi won t be satisfied until all of Arcadia belongs to their empire. I will never surrender. I d rather die than submit to the Azadi. People only agree with you out of fear or ignorance. You have but one argument to support your cause...and it hangs from your belt, Azadi. You can kill my kin, but you can never kill our beliefs. Too many believe that if we only give the Azadi time, they will leave us be. I do not. The Azadi will never leave us be. Our culture is dying in Marcuria. How can anyone stand living here? Your victory will be your downfall, Azadi. You will gain nothing from eliminating us but a world bereft of choice and diversity. The only way to evolve is to keep an open mind. Try keeping an open mind. You will see that we are not so different, you and I. If you do not accept others, you can never truly accept yourself. I d give my right arm - and my left! - to see the fabled library of the Dark People. But they won t let me go with them to their city... Show me a man who reads, and I ll show you a man of reason. Deprive man of literature, and you deprive him of life. I can show you my book if you like, sir. It s not been banned. I m just passing through, sir. Just passing through. I ve yet to read many Azadi books. Could you recommend some for me? My first boyfriend was Zhid. Diversity never hurt anyone. Too bad the Azadi can t see that. The Azadi tell us not to fraternise with non-humans, but I don t care. What are they gonna do? Arrest me? I d tell you what I think of you if I wasn t so afraid of the repercussions. Have you ever had a real discussion with anyone, or do people just tell you what you want to hear all the time? Leave me alone, Azadi. There are plenty of other women in the city who would be happy to serve you. Don t tell me to submit to the Azadi. I won t. Ever. I ll keep fighting the Azadi until the day I die. Should they flee back to their continent, we ll take the war to them, mark my word. Keep your distance, Azadi. I might say something I ll regret. The Static s getting worse and worse. I can t even go to work anymore. Our consoles won t connect to the Wire. I don t know what to do. The office s been closed down because of problems with the Wire, and I m not making any money. Lots of people are afraid. If the Syndicate can t stop the Static, what s going to happen? Why are you approaching me? I m not a trueborn , am I? I thought your kind didn t fraternise with my kind. Have you gone slumming, Azadi? Everyone s talking about the Static these days. I have to admit that I m quite fed up with it already. You know what pisses me off about the Static? Everyone always wants to talk about it, so I have to keep myself updated and watch the news. I hate that. I just hope this Static thing won t interfere with WATIcorp s plans. That new product is supposed to come out this spring, I think. Some people are saying that the Static is going to lead to another Collapse, but I don t think the Syndicate would allow that to happen. I m not afraid of another Collapse. We ll be safe here in Casablanca. We have everything we need. I try not to watch the news. It s always Static this and catastrophe that . Whatever happened to staying positive? Yesterday, I was having my hair re-aligned and we lost Wire contact right in the middle of the procedure. I only got it fixed this morning. How s it look? Show me a man who doesn t care about his hair, and I ll show you a damn fool. I can t get milk anywhere anymore. Apparently, because of the Static, deliveries are slow or non-existent all over the city. Chapter 12 It s not that martial arts needs to be such an important part of your life. But passion is always important. I m sorry, Jama. It just doesn t seem matter as much to me as it used to. I m sorry, Jama. It just doesn t seem to matter as much to me as it used to. But let s leave it at that for now, and get started on today s lesson. I guess I just don t care as much about martial arts as I used to. It doesn t seem as important to me anymore. Then maybe you should consider doing something else with your time. But let s leave it at that for now, and get started on today s lesson. I can t help it. I ve just...lost interest. And not just in martial arts, but in everything. Nothing you do, if done with passion, is pointless. But let s leave it at that, and get started on today s lesson. Every day s exactly the same, and I m not doing anything to change that. There s no school to go to, no job, and I barely spend time with my friends. What s left of them. You re right. I mean, he s my friend, too, and I want to help him. I just don t know if going to Newport is the way to do that. Oh, they re here. The biggest one, they are the Shakespeareans. Stupid names, stupid clothes...very, very big guns. Not so fast. I like you. You got spirit. I want to help. Maybe we can make trade? I don t have anything to trade. All I have is my mobile. v 0.6.27 12.15.2010 PLEASE NOTE FOR THIS PUBLISH WE ARE RESETTING ALL PLAYERS BACK TO LEVEL 1 WITH NEW-PLAYER RESOURCES, UNITS, AND TECHNOLOGIES. WE ARE ALSO REMOVING ALL EXISTING PLAYER BASES. YOU WILL RECEIVE ONE FREE BASE WHEN YOU LOG IN FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU IMMEDIATELY EDIT THIS BASE AND SET UP ITS DEFENSES AND MINES BEFORE ATTACKING OTHER BASES. * NEW BASE OFFICER SYSTEM! The number of bases you can have at any given time is now determined by how many Officers you have. You can only have as many Officers as your current level (if you are level 2, you have 2 Officers.) Each time you level up, you are granted an additional Officer. Each Officer has two values Defense Leadership and Attack Leadership. The Defense Leadership determines how many capacity points you can deploy on a base that is commanded by that Officer. The Attack Leadership determines how many capacity points you can deploy when attacking another base with that Officer. Officers are not required to lead your attacks - but if you attack without an officer, you can not capture the base - you can only LOOT it. Which brings us to the next major update! * NEW LOOT SYSTEM! If you win a battle using an Officer, you are given the choice at the end of the battle to either LOOT or CAPTURE the base. Looting the base allows you to steal an amount of resources from the player who owned that base proportionate to the number of kills you made during the battle. The more you kill, the more you will loot. You will always loot a percentage of the defending player s current resource stash, usually earning some amount of gold, iron and stone. If you attack a base WITHOUT an Officer leading the attack, you can only loot the base, and cannot capture it. If you decide to capture the base instead of looting it, the only loot you will get is a percentage of the defending player s resources stored in any SILOS on that base. * NEW COMMAND VEHICLE! Command Centers and Command Castles have been replaced by a mobile Command Vehicle on all bases. You are considered to be the winner of a battle if you destroy the Command Vehicle (or CV for short.) Furthermore, when editing your own base, you may pick up and move the CV to any location you desire. However, you cannot save an edited base unless the CV has been placed somewhere on the map, so if you pick it up, remember to place it back down somewhere! * BLACK MARKET REVAMP! Check out the new Black Market, found by clicking the button with the bearded guy up at the top of the screen just to the right of the Marauders logo. The Black Market is where you can spend Gems to buy unique Vehicles or Infantry squads, new Base Officers, resources, and more! Just a few Gems can really get you ahead of the competition in here. * NEW IN-GAME USER INTERFACE! It s new, it s improved, and it s animated! Most of it should be familiar to you, but we went back to the drawing board with the whole thing and made it much more dynamic and efficient. Look for even more enhancements coming soon! * NEW LOGIN SPLASH SCREEN! No longer cluttered with news posts and other distractions, the new Marauders homepage gets you right into the action in the most efficient way possible. Just log in and click the big green PLAY button! * NEW PRODUCTION FACILITIES! The new Engineering Bay, Training Facility and Laboratory structures can be added to your bases to increase the productivity values of your Engineering, Training and Laboratory rooms in the web game interface. Higher productivity means cheaper prices and shorter build times for all items in that room! You can also increase productivity by training Engineers, Instructors and Scientists, as you did before this update. * NEW MAPS! All new maps designed to work with the new Command Vehicle have been released for this build, which was the primary reason for the reset. The new maps are a better size to get you into the action faster and reducing the amount of tedious movement turns you have to make. The camera is now also constrained to the action, so you shouldn t ever see the black edges of the map anymore. * NEW PROPAGANDA TRUCK! This new vehicle will increase the movement range of all friendly units within its area of influence. * You can no longer attack other players until you are level 4. Below that, you will be attacking randomly-generated AI bases owned by the Militia. After level 4, you may still attack random Militia bases, but you may find it more lucrative to pillage and capture bases owned by other Marauders... * Numerous web interface fixes and enhancements. * Numerous enhancements and fixes to the AI. Hotfix 2 - v 0.5.169 11.03.2010 * Fixed an issue with the FOW where enemy units that fire from the FOW were not being revealed. v 0.5.168 10.29.2010 * Three new units! Bomb Trucks can be sent into the middle of the enemy forces and detonated for MASSIVE damage to surrounding units. This kills the truck, however. And don t let your own units near the explosion, or they will die too! Repair trucks can restore health to vehicles, and Ambulances can restore health to squads of human units. * Attacks will now show a numeric value of the damage they cause on impact, or "MISS" if appropriate. * More AI performance improvements. v 0.5.145 10.13.2010 * Militia bases are no longer direct clones of player bases. They will now be populated with randomly-generated defenses appropriate to the player s level. * The Militia player will now always be the same level as the attacking player to better balance the end-of-battle XP earnings. * Fixed a problem where framerate would drop drastically due to the AI calculating lots of data each frame when the enemy had nothing but defensive structures left. * Scientist Level 2 should now be researchable at level 6. * The Library has been activated! Click on the book button on the top right corner of the Play Page to check it out and get all kinds of detailed help on every aspect of the game. * You can now see what units are deployed on a base without having to open it in Edit mode. Click on the base to see the detail page, and look towards the top left corner of the main window to see the new Base Contents section. * Long chat submissions should properly display on more than one line now, rather than stepping on the next chat message. * Many other minor bug fixes. KNOWN ISSUES * The Base Edit Tutorial is currently broken and cannot be completed. We will be releasing a hotfix in the next 48 hours to fix this. The workaround is to simply close the 3D game window when you get stuck and the tutorial will continue from there without issue. v 0.5.104 09.22.2010 * Added a new structure type called "barricades", which act as simple destructible road blocks to hinder enemy progress. * Fixed a problem where high-level research projects wouldn t stay completed. * Fixed several end-of-game XP rounding errors. * Made the "Back" button in the top left corner of the main game window larger, and added a "World Map" button to the top right corner of the main game window. * Added lots of useful statistics to the user profile pages, including recent battle history. v 0.5.98 09.10.2010 * Removed Gems from the leaderboard. No more buying your way to the top! * Leaderboard Empire stats now show the number of units you have rather than the cumulative unit score for each unit type. Final Empire Score is still based on the capacity score. * The XP bar now starts over at 0 when you level up, and only goes up to the difference in XP requirement between the current level and the next. This should make the XP progress bar a little easier to understand. * The 3D tutorial has been overhauled with a new map and easier-to-understand steps. * The 2D tutorial has been slightly revamped to fix several problems with certain steps from completing and advancing. It is also now easier to reset the tutorial, though players do not yet have the ability to do this for themselves. * The ISOTX logo should now be in correct proportion on the 3D game s loading screen. * More A.I. improvements. * New tech tree. * New high-level units! Level up and do all your research to find out what they are! v 0.5.75 08.28.2010 * Massive performance improvements throughout the site. You should notice that all rooms in the web game open much faster than before. * New leaderboard! Check it out to see where you rank. * Units and structures deployed on bases no longer count toward your used storage capacity. Only items that are currently found in your Storage Room, and items currently cooking in a queue will count toward your storage usage. * Base max storage is now 1800 instead of 2000, and all bases storage bonuses have been nerfed to balance with the new storage rules. * The productivity formulas have been adjusted for the queue rooms. Upgrade the rooms and train more Engineers, Trainers and Scientists to increase productivity! * You can now right-click in the fog of war to move units. * The AI problems from the last build have been repaired. The AI should no longer crash your browser window or lock up the game indefinitely. v 0.5.64 08.21.2010 * Players will now spawn in random locations when attacking a base, instead of in the same place every time. Build your defenses accordingly! * All units and structures should properly repair to full health following a battle. * Movement area shader updated to look more grid-like, rather than solid. * Units at the bottom of a ramp will now have correct line-of-sight toward units at the top of a ramp. * The storage capacity bonuses have been updated for all base types. * Purchasing items on the Black Market, such as resources and units, will allow you to go over-capacity on those resources and storage capacity. If you are over-capacity, your mines will not produce any more of that resource until you drop below maximum capacity. * Several layout fixes to the site. * Several performance enhancements related to the chat and queue systems. KNOWN ISSUES * Sometimes the AI will get stuck "thinking" under certain conditions. To fix this, simply close the attack window and click the big ATTACK button again to re-open it. This will start the battle again right where you left off. * Sometimes the AI units will continue animating after they finish moving. v 0.5.57 08.16.2010 * Fog of War no longer obscures the terrain, only enemy units and structures. * You may now move units into unexplored areas of the Fog of War by using the Move button. This does not yet work for the right-click context move command, but that s coming soon! * Fixed some problems with the email notifications when bases are captured. * Fixed an exploit where clicking READY before deploying units in attack mode would cause an instant win scenario. * Fixed a formula in the storage room where dismissing units was causing ridiculously high amounts of resources to be given back to the player. Hotfix 1 08.13.2010 * Level 2 and Level 3 silos should now increase your maximum resources. This value is updated every 10 minutes from the hour (e.g. - 2 00, 2 10, 2 20, 2 30, etc.), so you may have to wait up to 10 minutes to see your maximums increase after saving a base with silos on it. v 0.5.54 08.12.2010 * Improved server performance when users are viewing the screenshot gallery. * Fixed an issue that was causing the database server to lock up periodically, causing extreme slowness and timeouts for many users. * Added an email notification for when a base is lost. * Optimized the chat system to improve the speed of the site overall. * Fixed a problem that was causing some resource patches to not show up on some bases. v 0.5.48 08.09.2010 PLEASE NOTE FOR THIS PUBLISH WE ARE RESETTING ALL PLAYERS BACK TO LEVEL 1 WITH NEW-PLAYER RESOURCES, UNITS, AND TECHNOLOGIES. WE ARE ALSO REMOVING ALL EXISTING PLAYER BASES AND RE-CREATING FRESH BASES FOR MANY PLAYERS. THE NEW TUTORIAL WILL GRANT PLAYERS A FREE BASE AT ITS CONCLUSION, BUT IF YOU NEED TO RESTART THE TUTORIAL, OR OTHERWISE HAD A PROBLEM OBTAINING AN INITIAL BASE, PLEASE LET US KNOW IN THE BETA FORUMS. THANK YOU! * Fixed an issue that was preventing some people from buying stuff with Gems in the Black Market until they logged out and logged back in. * The last publish broke the ability to level up queue rooms. This has been repaired. * Several tweaks to the tutorial script to make things more clear and precise. * Fixed a problem with the post-tutorial base generator that was setting an incorrect path to the General s avatar. * Reduced the initial starting Leadership value for bases down from 900 to 600 to correct some balancing problems. * Fixed several issues with infantry squad attack damage values. This should improve the AI slightly, as well as fix several balancing issues. * The various pages of the web game should now show a loading animation while they load. * Replaced the map flags with new graphics. * Balanced the XP required for each level. People shouldn t be jumping 7 levels from one battle anymore. v 0.5.47 08.08.2010 PLEASE NOTE FOR THIS PUBLISH WE ARE RESETTING ALL PLAYERS BACK TO LEVEL 1 WITH NEW-PLAYER RESOURCES, UNITS, AND TECHNOLOGIES. THANK YOU! * The first version of the new player tutorial is live. At the conclusion of the tutorial, you will be granted a free base of a random type. * Fixed several bugs in the queue rooms that were preventing freshly-built units from showing up in your storage for several minutes. * Fixed several layout and alignment issues with the queue rooms. * Implemented a new beta invite registration page. * Fixed another problem that should help to prevent the loser in a battle from getting 0 XP, despite the loser making a few kills. v 0.5.26 08.04.2010 PLEASE NOTE FOR THIS PUBLISH WE ARE RESETTING ALL PLAYERS BACK TO LEVEL 1 WITH NEW-PLAYER RESOURCES, UNITS, AND TECHNOLOGIES. WE ARE ALSO REMOVING ALL EXISTING PLAYER BASES AND RE-CREATING FRESH BASES FOR MANY PLAYERS. IF YOU DID NOT GET A BASE AND WOULD LIKE ONE, PLEASE MAKE YOUR REQUEST IN THE BETA FORUMS. THANK YOU! * Introducing the Black Market! Click the little green button next to the gold, iron or stone resource monitors to check it out. We ll be granting free gems to all beta players over the next few days. * Lots more tooltips have been added, most importantly the tooltips on all unit portraits in the queue rooms. Hover over them to get information about health, attack damage and range, mining rates, storage bonuses, AP, and more. The items in the Laboratory will also tell you what they unlock when you research them. * The A.I. will try not to bunch itself up into small groups that can be taken out with AOE damage. * The A.I. will now be better about "making up its mind" about what it s doing. Previously, it would switch between tasks too often. * Dismissing units from the Storage Room will now return 33% of the resources required to build them back to the player. * We are now running from a brand new set of server hardware that should be faster and more secure. Overall, downloads and site navigation should be faster. * The terrain during Base Edit and Attack Deployment phases is now color-coded to better indicate where units and structures can be placed. Most of the terrain will now be red during these phases, indicating an invalid location. * The costs for building and training units and structures have been overhauled in the name of balance. * Updated the productivity formulas for all the queue rooms in the name of balance. * Bases will now have a specific storage bonus that they grant. The amount of the bonus is dependent upon the base type. For example, Town bases provide the largest bonus, while Forest bases provide the smallest. * All new maps! * Tutorials coming soon! v 0.5.0 08.01.2010 * Fixed the end-of-game calculations to ensure the correct XP was granted to both players. Some games may still be broken until the server reset scheduled for 08.04.2010. * Green buttons no longer grant instant refills of resources. These will be re-enabled in the next patch to link to the Black Market page, where you can trade Gems for resources. * Hooked up the buttons to the right of the chat window - they should now link to the correct locations. * Back button will now return to the previous page (in most cases) instead of always returning to the main World Map. * Improved pagination controls for the player s base list. * Removed unnecessary chat buttons. * Removed unnecessary profile buttons to the left of the player s avatar. * Removed the map coordinate display for all users except admins. This was a debugging feature meant for the developers. * Several improvements and additions to the tooltip system. Hovering over something you don t understand should shed at least a little light on the subject. * Highlight color on the bribe list reconfigured to not burn your eyes out when you look at it. * The magnifying glass icon next to items in the bribe list will now link directly to that base. * Clicking the avatar of the owner of the base you re viewing will take you to their profile page where you can add them as a friend or send them a PM. v 0.4.9 07.28.2010 PLEASE NOTE FOR THIS PUBLISH WE ARE RESETTING ALL PLAYERS BACK TO LEVEL 1 WITH NEW-PLAYER RESOURCES, UNITS, AND TECHNOLOGIES. WE ARE ALSO REMOVING ALL EXISTING PLAYER BASES AND RE-CREATING FRESH BASES FOR MANY PLAYERS. IF YOU DID NOT GET A BASE AND WOULD LIKE ONE, PLEASE MAKE YOUR REQUEST IN THE BETA FORUMS. THANK YOU! * Fixed some issues that were causing the number of units in storage to go negative. * Fixed an issue that was causing a Command Center to show up in your storage, and allowing you to place them on maps (only to have them get stuck.) * Replaced the entire technology tree with a new one. The laboratory research projects should be paced better now. * End of game calculation tweaks to improve the gold payouts at the end of a battle. * If you have silos on a base, and lots of resources in the bank, and someone steals that base, they get some of the resources that are stored in those silos. * Building units and structures in the queues should now allow those freshly-built units to appear in Base Edit Mode immediately. Previously, there was a several-minute delay. * There are now new level 2 and level 3 versions of most structures, including mines, quarries, power stations, silos and turrets. * A tutorial is coming soon! For this build we have re-implemented the majority of the SBBG tutorial, and now just have to finish the 3D portion. * Sai Nyasson will now grant you some gold each day for logging in. The amount of gold is dependent upon your current level. * There are now three new locations from the Region Map Stark s Tavern, Jasmine s Gentlemen s Club, and Frannel s Smoking Den. Check them out for the latest information on juicy bases to steal! * Removed the map coordinate display from the World and Region maps. * Fixed a bug causing text corruption in the chat stream when certain special characters are typed. * Fixed bugs related to browser cross-compatibility in the queue rooms. * Leaderboard page has been slightly improved to fit within the window properly, and to include a scroll bar. * The resource monitors on the right side of the play page will auto-refresh more often as a result of expenditures in the queue rooms. * Many tweaks to existing unit and structure properties in the name of balance. * Default Unity loading logo replaced by ISOTX logo. * Base Generals can now be promoted to allow you to place more objects on a base. * Replaced Welcome message below your avatar with a handy LOGOUT link. * Fixed several missing image errors throughout the SBBG. * Added the new Command Castle to "Castle" type maps. This is equivalent to the Command Center on other maps. v 0.4.8 07.21.2010 PLEASE NOTE FOR THIS PUBLISH WE ARE RESETTING ALL PLAYERS BACK TO LEVEL 1 WITH NEW-PLAYER RESOURCES, UNITS, AND TECHNOLOGIES. WE ARE ALSO REMOVING ALL EXISTING PLAYER BASES AND RE-CREATING FRESH BASES FOR MANY PLAYERS. IF YOU DID NOT GET A BASE AND WOULD LIKE ONE, PLEASE MAKE YOUR REQUEST IN THE BETA FORUMS. THANK YOU! * Players can now buy gems at the store! Click the treasure chest icon at the far right of the main play page. * Green buttons next to resources will continue to work for the next few days, but we will be replacing their function in the next few days to allow you to convert gems into resources. * Gold/Iron/Stone silos placed on maps should now increase your maximum storage capacity of that resource. * New players can now build the AT Turret from the outset. * Many bug fixes to improve the stability of attacking Militia (NPC) bases. * Fixed a bug that was causing end-of-game kills and losses to be out of sync. * Fixed a bug that was causing the smart downloader to download ALL game assets, and not just the ones needed for that particular base. * Players should now level up properly based on the XP they earn at the end of a battle. * Bases should now be immune from attack for 6 hours after being attacked. * You can no longer attack bases that are currently under attack or being edited, which will prevent many problems with bases getting out of sync and unstable. * New maps! * Players should now receive a message in the profile message center when their bases are captured by another player. * The Army Editor will now only show units that are currently in your storage room. If you need more tanks or infantry, build them in the Engineering or Training rooms! Don t forget to research new technologies in the Laboratory! * Command Centers are no longer buildable. The only Command Center that may be on a base is the one that comes with the base in the first place.
